CLOSING RECEPTION & ARTIST TALK: Thursday, Dec. 13th @ 6PM
Richard Patterson and Shaun “El C” Leonardo
(video of the discussion by Vance Wingate)

The Art Foundation presents twain, an examination of the alter ego as an artistic method of expansion and safe haven.
Concerned with the increasing burden of reputation as a stultifying constraint upon artists, the exhibit allows its artists to take-up an artificial duality, promoting unfulfilled desires by negating a recognizable identity through the person of the alter-ego. This anonymity of the true individual leaves objects and embedded concept free from qualifying associated status.

Capitalizing on this highly democratic method of exhibiting, The Art Foundationhas invited a range of internationally recognized artists, art groups, and writers to participate in the exhibition, many of whom will remain anonymous. Specific works will: engage reflections on both local and international issues, address the phenomena of the alter-ego’s persona eclipsing the artist’s original identity, allow for the permissive recreation of works previously authored, promote dubious legitimacy, and highlight the written word as contextual subterfuge.

Recognizing the internet as a primary source of avatar dissemination, The Art Foundation will also provide a partner, online, catch-all exhibition to further explore these themes at http://theartfoundation.tumblr.com/

“Twain, the latest project by The Art Foundation, brings together a collection of artists operating under alter-egos, pseudonyms, or assumed names, which creates a show that is full of tension, primarily involving the relationship between authorship and meaning. Work here includes absurdist sculpture, found and “activated” objects, video, text, and photography, and all of it takes the ground out from under the viewer with roguish plays off title cards, exterior fictions that inform the objects, and a recurring challenge to the idea that a work of art stands on its own. It is a show not merely driven by ideas, but, by curatorial design, tries to subvert role of biography and product in the conception of the art object. By doing so, twain back-handedly provides these aspects of the art object with a kind of screaming presence.”

Facilitated by The Art Foundation, Robert Andrade proposes Ruined State(s) No. 2, a public work in Dallas, TX exploring issues of state power related to the communal environment and physical site from which authority derives validity. As the project progresses it has evolved to question the role of the proposal and efforts to realize the project as art in itself.

About the Project

The project was proposed publicly at “Art in the Public Sphere” on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012 to coincide with the proposal exhibition at Richland College’s Brazos Gallery on display Aug. 9 through Sept. 7, 2012.

An art party acting as fundraiser, “Altered States,” was held near the site on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 to coincide with Andrade’s UTD CentralTrak artist-in-residence project.

“The project is meant to consider change within States of dominance along with the connected ideology and its effects on the ground within the realm of the everyday,” states Andrade. By excavating the city plan of Washington D.C. -a global power center- into Dallas a comparison is enacted by mobilizing the symbolic structure of power into a semi-permanent state. The excavated earthwork will allow individuals access to meander the streets of the signified, yet physically failing, state of power. Locally, the project exposes conflicting stratifications and hierarchies concerned with urban development for the arts.

A wide-range of perspectives on the function of art in the public sphere will be addressed, from fostering community through one-time, participatory events, to beautifying the urban landscape with objects, to the nuts and bolts of acquiring sites and working with commercial entities to realize a project, as well as the notion of the Internet as public domain. Though their approaches are varied, each contributor in “Art in the Public Sphere” believes in the importance of artists activating public space in nontraditional ways .

Following a brief video by the creator of Aesthletics, artist Tom Russotti, opening remarks will be made by Nasher Sculpture Center Senior Curator, Jed Morse. Presentations will then be given by Dallas artist/curator Cynthia Mulcahy, Austin artist Shawn Smith, Dallas’ Henderson Art Project coordinator Scott Trent, and members of the artist-run Dallas Biennial. A public works fundraising video by Claude Collins-Stracensky will be show and plans for a proposed land art project in West Dallas by San Diego artist Robert Andrade, in collaboration with The Art Foundation, will also be presented.

The Art Foundation is a Dallas-based art collective that aims to cultivate rigorous artistic dialogue and innovative art exhibition stragedies. Joshua Goode, Ryder Richards, Lucia Simek, and Andrew Douglas Underwood are The Art Foundation.

The Nasher’s Big Book of Urinals

How the museum came to own Fountainhead, the baddest tome ever to come out of Dallas.

Artist Andrew Underwood had tried his luck with Dallas’ commercial galleries, meeting with gallerists and opening his studio to visits. Their interest in his work remained elusive.

“I felt like there was no place for me in a commercial gallery in Dallas,” says Underwood, whose “research-based” art projects often combine drawings and multimedia, books, boxes, songs, maps, and photographs. “The response I kept getting was, ‘I can’t do anything with this.’ ”

What followed was a three-step descent into discontent: a trip to New York to see a well-curated show by Thomas Demand at Matthew Marks Gallery, a panel discussion at the Dallas Museum of Art focused on local art, and a subsequent article on the arts website Glasstire written by Lucia Simek that spawned a long chain of comments parsing the various shortcomings of the Dallas “scene.”

“I was thinking about adding my two cents,” Underwood says of the Glasstire comment kvetching. “But what I needed to do was take action rather than just talk.”

Underwood reached out to Simek; Ryder Richards, an artist, prolific curator, and Richland College art professor; and Joshua Goode, an installation-based artist who teaches and runs a gallery at Tarrant County College-South and mostly shows outside of North Texas. The quartet met at a Central Market cafe and began hashing out a plan, a project that could, in whatever small and accessible way, move the needle.

The plan for Fountainhead now is to exhibit it at the Nasher, accompanying a show that opens September 29, 2012 called “Sculpture in So Many Words, Text Pieces 1960–1975,” which consists of conceptual work that, like Fountainhead, also deals with the nature of the art object.

(Many thanks to the Nasher Sculpture Center and D Magazine for aiding in the success of Fountainhead.)

Fountainhead
April 14-15, 2012
Opening reception Saturday, April 14, 6-9 pm

The Gibson Company Lofts, 824 Exposition Ave. #6, Dallas (MAP)

For its inaugural curated exhibition, Fountainhead, The Art Foundation has solicited the alteration of various photographic iterations of Marcel Duchamp’s readymade, Fountain, by a number of local and international artists. The altered images have been compiled in an outsized book that will be exhibited during the weekend of the Dallas Art Fair, April 14-15, alongside a small exhibition of art objects that explore themes of authorship, receptivity, deception and manipulation.

Referencing the prankster quality of Duchamp’s decimation of the existing art structures of his time, Fountainhead parrots the language of the traditional exhibition structure while reveling in the paradoxes and latitudes allowed in our current poly-post-ism of art. Flexing ideas of attribution, the works presented inFountainhead alternately specify and misconstrue authorship, as a means of bothering the leveled readings of the objects and actions presented in the exhibition.

Contributing artists featured in the Fountainhead book include: Frances Bagley (Dallas), Jesse Morgan Barnett (Dallas), Laetitia Benat (Paris, FR), Richie Budd (Fort Worth), Rebecca Carter (Dallas), Steve Cruz (Dallas), Matt Cusick (Dallas), Laura Doughtie (Dallas), Erika Duque (Fort Worth), Celia Eberle (Dallas), Cassandra Emswiler (Dallas), Teresa Gomez-Martorell (Barcelona, SP), Brenton Good (Harris, Pennsylvania), Sara Hignite (Dallas), Kelly Lynn Jones (San Francisco, CA), Gerald Lopez (Corpus Christi, TX), Stephanie Madewell (Brooklyn, NY), Sam Matineau (Brooklyn, NY), Lindsay McCulloch (Washington, DC), Ruben Nieto (Dallas), Tom Orr (Dallas), Sara Pringle (Brooklyn, NY), Teresa Rafidi (Dallas), Adam Raymont (Berlin), Enrico Riley (Vermont), Gregory Ruppe (Fort Worth), Gretchen Schermerhorn (Washington, DC), Shawn Smith (Austin, TX), Ian F. Thomas (Slippery Rock, PA), Karen Weiner (Dallas), Jonathan Whitfill (Lubbock, TX), and Zero (location unknown).

Exhibited art objects by Jesse Morgan Barnett (Dallas), Brian Jobe (Knoxville, TN), Kelly Lynn Jones (San Francisco, CA,) Brandon Kennedy (Irving), Gerald Lopez (Corpus Christi,) Jeff McMillan (London, UK), James Sullivan (Dallas), and Carla Nicolás (Zaragoza, Spain).
